The lifespan of a Solar Inverter

Solar inverters are essential to any solar system and must be regularly maintained to keep them working correctly. The lifespan of a solar inverter can vary depending on the type of inverter and the environment it is used in, but most solar inverters will last for at least 10 years with proper maintenance.

Will damaged Solar Panels still work?

Solar panels are designed to withstand damage from the elements but can be damaged by severe weather events or physical impact. If a solar panel is damaged, it may still be able to produce electricity, but the output will be reduced. Damaged solar panels should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible to ensure that the system operates at peak efficiency.

A string of solar panels on your roof is only as good as its weakest link. If a panel is damaged, the entire output of the string will be compromised, reducing the efficiencies to match that of the damaged panel and significantly reducing your electricity generation potential.

Regular maintenance is recommended to maximise the generation of your solar PV system, and issues should be rectified at the earliest opportunity.

Can a Cracked Solar Panel be Repaired?

Over time, solar panels can become cracked or broken due to the force of the elements. While a compromised solar panel is not a total loss, it will not perform to its maximum potential. When a panel is significantly damaged, it can’t generate as much power, but as long as the cell is not more than 20 per cent damaged, it should be able to produce most of its rated voltage.

In some cases, cracked or broken solar panels can still produce voltage, but they are more likely to stop working as constant exposure to the elements eventually damages the cells. If you have a damaged solar panel, it is essential to repair it as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure that your system continues to operate at peak efficiency.

    Replacing a damaged solar panel

If a solar panel has been damaged and compromises the system’s performance, it will need to be replaced with a new compatible panel. If you have a warranty on your solar system, check to see if the damage is covered before proceeding with repairs. In most cases, the damage will not be covered under warranty, but it is always best to check.

When selecting an installer for Solar PV installations, always ensure they have the correct qualifications to undertake the task. Using a HIES & MCS certified installer is the easiest way to ensure peace of mind
