If you own an electric vehicle, or are thinking of buying one, then installing an EV home charge point makes perfect sense, giving you total control over when you charge your car.

By having an EV home charge point you will be able to plug in at your own convenience rather than relying on public charging points. Also, when choosing an installer to fit your electric charging point, it’s important to find someone who fully understands how to link it to other potential renewable energy source systems in order to maximise efficiency.

How does an electric car charger work?

Electric vehicles are powered by batteries and require a charging point to recharge them. An EV charging point pumps electricity into the batteries as quickly as possible while monitoring them to avoid any potential damage during the process.

Charging time depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A typical electric car, such as a Nissan LEAF 30kWh, would take four hours to charge from empty with a 7kW home charging point.

Can you have an EV charge point installed in your home?

Yes. Having an EV charge point installed in your home is the best method to charge your electric vehicle as you can charge it overnight, making it far more practical as well as cost effective.

Always remember to use a reputable installer.

How is an electric car charger installed?

Depending on your power supply and where you park your vehicle, an installer will be able to determine the best location for your EV charger point.

Your installer will position and fix the charger by drilling and clipping the cable to the wall. Your electricity supply will be briefly turned off while the charger is connected to the main power supply. Final safety tests will be carried out and then the qualified installer will give you a full demonstration of how to operate your new charger point.

How much does installing an EV charger cost?

The purchase and installation of an EV charging point normally costs around £1,000*1 depending on the model of charger. However, grants and financial support may be available.

There are many benefits to having an EV charging point at your home:

  • Depending on your car, charging time can be reduced by between 30% and 60% instead of using the mains.
  • Fully charging your battery, rather than just for a couple of hours, will be better in the long run and this is easier to do with your own charging point.

Grants & financial support

From April 2022, the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) will no longer be open to homeowners, including those with mortgages, who live in single-unit properties such as bungalows and detached, semi-detached or terraced housing.

The scheme will remain open to:
• homeowners who live in flats
• people in rental accommodation (flats and single-use properties)

What types of electric car does an EV charger support?

The majority of electric cars use a standard called J1772 for 110V and 240V charging, and this is the most common and preferred connector for an EV home charging point, as well as public chargers.

Tesla vehicles have a different standard but come with a suitable adapter.

Typical electricity costs for an electric car

The most cost-effective method to charge an electric car would be overnight using an EV home charging point. Based on an average overnight electricity rate of 13p per kWh, it would cost approximately £3.64 to fully charge a 30kWh Nissan LEAF, providing around 115 miles of range.

In comparison, a rapid charging station at a motorway service station would typically cost £6.50 for 30 minutes of charge.
